The Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram has once again come alive with the energy of the KGL Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship — a tournament that has quickly grown into one of Ghana’s most vital breeding grounds for future football stars.
Launched in 2021, the competition has steadily risen in stature, becoming a platform not only for unearthing raw talent but also for fostering regional unity. Already, it has produced players who have successfully made the leap into top-flight football.
This year’s edition has drawn sides from all ten football regions, each qualifying through their respective local colts leagues. The Ashanti Region made history as the inaugural winners, while the Western Region arrives as defending champions after edging the Eastern Region 2-1 in last year’s final at the same Prampram venue.
Speaking to the media, Julius Ben Emmunah, Head of Competition at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and project lead for the 2025 KGL Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship, highlighted the tournament’s developmental mandate.
“We review the competition year after year to ensure that the main objective — talent development — is achieved. We want to identify young players and continue the production line. For the national teams to excel, there must be a strong hub, and this competition is designed to be that hub. Every player should get at least 40 minutes on the pitch to be assessed by scouts.
We’ve also expanded participation from 10 to include academic teams, ensuring that academies also benefit fully. The essence is to provide scouts with greater access to talent,” he explained.
The atmosphere in Prampram is electric, with fans, coaches, and scouts all eager to see which youngsters will seize the spotlight. For many players, this is more than just another tournament — it’s the gateway to professional football.
Joe Salam Abubakar, Vice Chairman of the KGL Regional U-17 Colts Championship, stressed the importance of the competition to Ghana’s football ecosystem.
“The passion is high, and any player here can easily feature in the Premier League. If this momentum continues, Ghana football will reap the benefits. Already, several players from past editions have joined Premier League clubs, strengthening the future of the game,” he said.
Now firmly established as a proving ground for Ghana’s teenage prospects, the KGL Championship is shaping the next generation of footballers while igniting regional pride. As the 2025 edition reaches its climax, all eyes remain on Prampram, where tomorrow’s stars are making their mark today.
The 2025 KGL Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship Grand Finale will take place on Saturday 27th September, 2025 at Teshie McDan Park.
