The National Sports Authority (NSA) has activated emergency pitch maintenance and management operations at the Accra Sports Stadium following hours of torrential rainfall that left sections of the playing surface waterlogged.
The intervention comes as grounds staff work around the clock to protect and restore the stadium’s turf, which has endured an intense schedule over the past two years.
According to the NSA, the Accra Sports Stadium has hosted more than 100 matches since the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in late 2024. The venue subsequently became the home ground for Ghana’s final phase of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which commenced in March 2025.
The heavy usage has placed enormous pressure on the playing surface, which was originally designed to accommodate approximately 40 matches per calendar season. With no significant recovery period between competitions, the pitch has been subjected to more than double its recommended annual workload.
The latest downpour has further tested the resilience of the turf, prompting the NSA to deploy emergency maintenance measures aimed at preserving the quality and safety of the playing surface.
Officials remain committed to ensuring that the stadium remains fit for both domestic and international football activities despite the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions and an overloaded fixture calendar.
The NSA is expected to continue monitoring the situation closely while implementing long-term pitch management strategies to sustain the venue’s standards and enhance its durability for future competitions.
