Ghanaian boxing sensation John “Expensive Boxer” Laryea has opened up about the significant influence of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan as he prepares for one of the biggest fights of his career.
Laryea is set to face Argentina’s Adrian Maximiliano Robledo on Saturday in a crucial World Boxing Association (WBA) world title eliminator in Buenos Aires, with a potential world title opportunity at stake.
As preparations reach their final stage, the undefeated Ghanaian has revealed that Gyan has played a much bigger role than simply being a member of his team.
“Asamoah Gyan is my father. I’m grateful that he is part of the team. We trained together, from Ghana to Argentina. At the same time, I can tell you, he is my assistant coach,” Laryea said.
The relationship between the two Ghanaians has added an extra layer of motivation to Laryea’s preparations, with Gyan’s experience as a top-level footballer and his growing involvement in boxing providing support as the young fighter gets ready for his biggest test yet.
Laryea arrives in Buenos Aires unbeaten, boasting an impressive professional record of 17 fights, 13 victories by knockout, no defeats and one draw.
The Ghanaian will now look to extend that unbeaten run against home favourite Robledo, who will have the backing of the Argentine crowd.
With the WBA eliminator carrying major implications for his world title ambitions, Laryea knows victory on Saturday could move him closer to achieving his dream of fighting for a world championship.
For now, the focus remains firmly on the task ahead.
