In a landmark move toward environmental conservation, Ghana has officially designated the Greater Cape Three Points Area as the country’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA). The announcement was made by Vice President during a ceremony held in Busua in the Western Region on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

The declaration marks a significant step in Ghana’s commitment to protecting its marine biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources. The Greater Cape Three Points Area, known for its rich marine life and vibrant coastal ecosystems, will now benefit from enhanced conservation measures aimed at preserving fish stocks, protecting endangered species, and restoring degraded habitats.

Speaking at the event, Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of safeguarding the country’s marine environment for future generations. She noted that the establishment of the MPA aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and overfishing, while also supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The initiative is expected to regulate fishing activities, promote eco-tourism, and encourage scientific research in the area. Local stakeholders, including fishermen, traditional leaders, and environmental groups, are anticipated to play a key role in the management and sustainability of the protected zone.

Environmental experts have welcomed the move, describing it as a timely intervention to address the growing pressures on Ghana’s coastal resources. The Western Region, particularly around Cape Three Points, has long been recognized as a critical ecological zone due to its unique blend of marine and coastal habitats.
