Accra, Ghana – July 10, 2026 – Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Friday participated in the National General Cleaning Exercise at the Nungua Market area and around the Presidency, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving sanitation and creating a cleaner, healthier environment for all Ghanaians.
The Vice President worked alongside sanitation workers, security personnel, local authorities, market women, traders, youth groups, and residents who turned out in large numbers to clear choked drains, sweep streets, collect refuse, and improve the overall cleanliness of the area.
Her participation demonstrated the government’s determination to lead by example in promoting environmental cleanliness and encouraging citizens to take collective responsibility for maintaining clean communities.
The nationwide exercise forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s National General Cleaning Days initiative, declared for July 10 and 11, 2026, aimed at tackling poor sanitation, reducing the risk of flooding, and preventing the outbreak of sanitation-related diseases.
Government institutions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), security agencies, sanitation service providers, traditional leaders, religious organizations, civil society groups, market associations, schools, and volunteers joined similar exercises across the country.
The initiative comes as Ghana intensifies efforts to improve waste management and restore a culture of environmental responsibility, particularly following recent flooding incidents in parts of Accra that highlighted the need for regular desilting of drains and proper waste disposal.
By taking part in the exercise, the Vice President underscored the government’s commitment to making sanitation a shared national responsibility and urged all Ghanaians to continue supporting efforts to keep their communities clean beyond the designated cleaning days.
