The high-level visit by President John Dramani Mahama and his delegation to the United Kingdom has so far been a remarkable success, strengthening Ghana-UK relations while opening new opportunities for trade, investment, job creation and economic growth.
The well-organised and highly attended town hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in the UK one of the largest gatherings of Ghana’s diaspora in recent years demonstrated the President’s commitment to rebuilding confidence in Ghana’s economy and engaging citizens abroad in the nation’s development agenda.
From high-level discussions with senior UK government officials to strategic engagements with business leaders and investors, President Mahama has projected Ghana as a credible and attractive destination for investment.
With potential agreements worth up to £215 million, the visit is focused on three key priorities: enhancing Ghana-UK trade competitiveness, expanding access to funding, and creating employment opportunities for Ghana’s growing youth population.
One of the standout initiatives is the £101 million UK-backed Takoradi Floating Dock Project, which will establish the Gulf of Guinea’s first commercial-scale ship repair and dry-dock facility. The project is expected to create approximately 430 direct jobs, with at least 30 percent reserved for women, while positioning Ghana as a leading maritime hub in the region.
The partnership also includes significant climate and environmental investments, notably an £85 million reforestation fund and a £9 million initiative dedicated to forest restoration in the Oti Region. These projects will help strengthen Ghana’s environmental sustainability efforts while generating employment for local communities.
In the area of innovation and technology, a £6 million partnership will support the implementation of Ghana’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy and deepen scientific and technological collaboration between institutions in Ghana and the UK.
The health sector is also set to benefit from a £4 million partnership aimed at specialist clinical engineering training, which will enhance healthcare delivery and technical capacity. Additionally, new Transnational Education guidelines will provide Ghanaian students with greater access to world-class educational opportunities.
The visit sends a strong message that Ghana remains open for business and that investment, economic transformation and job creation continue to be at the heart of the President’s agenda. With improving economic prospects and renewed international engagement, Ghana is positioning itself for sustainable growth and prosperity.
