The Second Deputy Minority Whip, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and member of the ministerial vetting committee, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has launched a scathing attack on the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), accusing the agency of alleged overreach and abuse of power.
In a statement, Shaib expressed deep concerns about the NIB’s actions, which he claims are tantamount to political intimidation. “State agencies are granted legal authority to enforce the law in good faith, not as tools for political intimidation,” Shaib emphasized.
The MP’s comments come on the heels of a recent raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Addison. Shaib questioned the legitimacy of the search, pointing out that the National Security Coordinator apologized to Dr. Addison through Richard Jakpa’s phone.
“What is even more disturbing is that the National Security Coordinator called to apologize to Dr. Addison through Richard Jakpa’s phone. If the search was truly lawful, then why did the National Security Coordinator feel the need to apologize?” Shaib asked.
Shaib’s statement has sparked a heated debate about the role of state institutions in Ghana’s democracy. The MP’s comments are seen as a call to action, urging citizens and state institutions to prioritize the protection of citizens’ rights and the promotion of good governance.
