The Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, has inaugurated a five-member committee to review the Axle Load operation across the country.
The committee includes representatives from National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Standards Authority.
According to a press statement released on Tuesday, the committee would identify systemic and operational issues that require reforms, interrogate any violations of regulatory provisions, evaluate the management of collected fines and provide suitable recommendations to improve the Programme.
The Ministry noted that the overloading of heavy cargo vehicles has been identified as a major contributor to premature road pavement deterioration and increased traffic accidents throughout the country.
“As a result, the Ministry is seeking to reform the Axle Load Control programme, which is facing numerous operational challenges,” it explained.
The current Axle Load Control Programme faces numerous operational challenges that need immediate attention, so this review is a necessary step toward strengthening our road safety measures.
The Ministry assured the public of its dedication to enhancing road safety and reducing overloading incidents, which will help road pavements fulfil their intended lifespan.
