The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, on Friday led staff of the Ministry to participate in the National Clean-Up Exercise as part of government’s renewed drive to improve environmental sanitation across the country.
The exercise saw the Minister and officials of the Ministry actively engage in sweeping streets, desilting drains, clearing refuse and removing weeds from public spaces to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
The clean-up forms part of the nationwide initiative declared by President John Dramani Mahama to encourage citizens, institutions and communities to take collective responsibility for sanitation.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei stressed the importance of maintaining clean surroundings to prevent flooding, reduce the spread of diseases and improve public health. He urged Ghanaians to embrace cleanliness as a daily responsibility rather than limiting it to designated national clean-up days.
The Minister also used the occasion to commend the Buzstopboys, the youth volunteer group that has gained national recognition for organising regular community clean-up campaigns across the country.

He praised the group’s dedication and consistency, describing their efforts as an inspiration to both individuals and institutions in the fight against poor sanitation.
“The commitment and patriotism demonstrated by the Buzstopboys have shown that every Ghanaian has a role to play in keeping our environment clean. Their campaign continues to inspire many people to take action,” he said.
The National Clean-Up Exercise brought together government officials, public sector workers, community groups, youth organisations and volunteers who joined forces to clean markets, roads, drains and other public spaces across the country.

The exercise forms part of government’s broader environmental sanitation agenda aimed at creating cleaner communities, reducing waste accumulation and encouraging sustained public participation in maintaining a healthy environment. President Mahama has also indicated that government is considering instituting a monthly national clean-up day to reinforce the culture of cleanliness nationwide.
