When Ghana and Colombia meet in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, July 4, all eyes will not only be on the players but also on the two experienced tacticians patrolling the touchline.

Colombia head coach Néstor Gabriel Lorenzo and Ghana boss Carlos Queiroz bring decades of football knowledge, contrasting managerial journeys and impressive international experience into what promises to be one of the most intriguing knockout clashes of the tournament.

Lorenzo, 60, is an Argentine-born former defender who has transformed Colombia into one of South America’s most consistent national teams since taking charge in June 2022.

After retiring as a player in 1998, he began his coaching career as an assistant to José Pékerman with Argentina’s Under-20 team before later serving as assistant coach of the Colombian national team from 2012 to 2019.

His first senior managerial role came with Peru’s FBC Melgar in December 2020, where he guided the club to the 2022 Apertura title and a place in the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.

Since taking over Colombia, Lorenzo has enjoyed remarkable success. He led the team on a 28-match unbeaten run, secured memorable victories over Germany, Brazil, Uruguay and Spain, and guided Los Cafeteros to their first Copa América final in 23 years in 2024. Although Colombia lost the final to Argentina after extra time, the team scored a tournament-record 12 goals.

Lorenzo also steered Colombia to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing third in the CONMEBOL qualifying standings and securing the country’s seventh appearance at the global showpiece.

In 49 matches as Colombia coach, Lorenzo has recorded 30 wins, 12 draws and just seven defeats, giving him an impressive 61.22 percent win rate. His achievements also earned him recognition as one of the world’s top 10 national team managers in 2024.

Standing opposite him is veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, whose international coaching résumé spans nearly three decades.

The 73-year-old was appointed Ghana head coach on April 13, 2026, just before the FIFA World Cup, and has already guided the Black Stars into the knockout stages, becoming only the third foreign coach to achieve the feat after Ratomir Dujković in 2006 and Milovan Rajevac in 2010.

The 2026 tournament marks the second time Queiroz has successfully guided a team beyond the group stage at the World Cup, having previously led Portugal to the Round of 16 in South Africa in 2010.

Interestingly, Ghana’s third-place finish in Group L is the third occasion one of Queiroz’s teams has finished third in a World Cup group, following Iran’s campaigns in 2018 and 2022.

Queiroz has previously coached the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman, while also leading South Africa, Portugal and Iran to multiple FIFA World Cup appearances.

Ironically, he also managed Colombia between 2019 and 2020, overseeing 18 matches with nine wins, five draws and four defeats before departing the role.

His only previous World Cup knockout match ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain with Portugal in 2010, while his only World Cup meeting against a nation he had previously coached ended in a 1-1 draw between Iran and Portugal in 2018.

Queiroz also came within touching distance of continental glory when he led Egypt to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, eliminating Ivory Coast, Morocco and hosts Cameroon before narrowly losing to Senegal on penalties.

As Ghana and Colombia prepare for battle in Kansas City, the tactical duel between Lorenzo’s modern, attack-minded philosophy and Queiroz’s disciplined, pragmatic approach could prove just as decisive as the action on the pitch.

With both coaches renowned for their organisation and tournament experience, the biggest question remains: will this fascinating Round of 32 showdown be settled within 90 minutes, or will it require extra time before a winner emerges?
