The Upper East Rugby Association has taken another significant step in expanding the reach of rugby in Ghana after successfully introducing the sport to students of Bolgatanga Senior High School (BIG BOSS) in the Upper East Region.
The rugby development session, led by Upper East Rugby Association Coach Yussif Zida, exposed students to the fundamentals of the game through interactive drills, fun activities, and practical demonstrations. Beyond learning the basic skills of rugby, the students were also introduced to the sport’s core values of respect, discipline, teamwork, integrity, and sportsmanship.
The event was met with great enthusiasm as students actively participated throughout the session, displaying impressive energy, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace the sport. Their positive response highlighted the growing interest in rugby among young people in the region.
Coach Yussif Zida described the programme as another important milestone in the association’s mission to develop rugby at the grassroots level and create opportunities for young people to discover and nurture their talents both on and off the field.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to growing rugby across the Upper East Region and creating opportunities for young people to develop their talents both on and off the field,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the management, teachers, and students of Bolgatanga Senior High School for their warm reception and active participation, stressing that partnerships with educational institutions remain key to the growth of the sport.
The programme aligns with the broader vision of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), led by President Rafatu Inusah, whose administration has prioritised grassroots development, school rugby, coaching education, and expanding the sport into every region of the country.
Under Inusah’s leadership, Ghana Rugby has intensified efforts to introduce rugby to schools and communities through regional associations, while investing in capacity building for coaches and officials. These initiatives have contributed to increasing participation across the country and strengthening the foundation for future national teams.
The successful outreach at Bolgatanga Senior High School is another example of Ghana Rugby’s commitment to ensuring the game reaches more young people, particularly in underserved regions, while promoting life skills and positive values through sport.
