The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has continued its mission of expanding the game across the country by introducing rugby to members of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) as part of efforts to broaden participation and prepare the service for the upcoming SESSA Games.
The introductory session was led by Ghana Rugby President, Ms. Rafatu Inusah, alongside the Union’s Women’s Representative, Anita, Coach Jeffery, and national team players Khadijah and Percy, who guided participants through the fundamentals of the game.
The initiative forms part of Ghana Rugby’s strategic development agenda aimed at introducing the sport to various institutions while creating new opportunities for athletes to discover and embrace rugby. It also serves as preparation for the SESSA Games later this year, where the Ghana National Fire Service is expected to compete.
During the session, participants were introduced to the basic principles of rugby, including ball handling, tackling techniques, teamwork, and the laws of the game. The practical demonstrations and interactive drills gave firefighters their first taste of the sport, generating enthusiasm and interest among the participants.
Following the successful introduction, regular training sessions have commenced at the Fire Service Training School in Jamestown. These sessions are designed to build the participants’ technical abilities, improve their understanding of the game, and enhance their confidence as they prepare for future competitions.
The Ghana National Fire Service is also collaborating closely with Ghana Rugby to identify a dedicated group of personnel who will continue with structured training programmes. This approach is expected to ensure consistent development while establishing a competitive rugby team capable of representing the service at the SESSA Games and beyond.
Speaking through the initiative, Ghana Rugby reaffirmed its commitment to making rugby more accessible by taking the sport beyond traditional playing communities and into key national institutions. The Union believes rugby’s core values of discipline, respect, teamwork, integrity, and resilience align perfectly with the professional values of the Ghana National Fire Service.
The partnership represents another important milestone in Ghana Rugby’s nationwide development strategy, highlighting the Union’s determination to grow the game, nurture new talent, and strengthen institutional participation across Ghana.
With growing interest from members of the Fire Service and structured training now underway, the collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the continued growth of rugby while providing another platform for athletes to develop and compete at the highest level.
