The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in partnership with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, has commenced a major exercise to replace and upgrade electricity distribution transformers in Tamale and its surrounding communities.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen power delivery systems in northern Ghana, where residents and businesses have long grappled with unstable voltage levels and intermittent outages. By modernizing aging infrastructure and installing higher-capacity transformers, the project aims to stabilize voltage fluctuations and significantly reduce the frequency of power disruptions.

Officials say the intervention will not only improve the reliability of electricity supply but also support economic activity in the region. Small and medium-sized enterprises, which depend heavily on consistent power, are expected to benefit from the enhanced distribution network.

The upgrade forms a key component of the government’s wider agenda to modernize Ghana’s energy sector while advancing its green transition goals. Ensuring efficient electricity distribution is seen as critical to reducing energy losses and improving overall system performance.
