The family of James Victor Gbeho has officially informed John Dramani Mahama of the former diplomat’s passing during a courtesy call at the Presidency.
According to the family, it was both culturally and diplomatically appropriate to formally notify the President before making a public announcement of Ambassador Gbeho’s death.
Ambassador Gbeho was one of Ghana’s most accomplished diplomats and statesmen, earning respect both at home and internationally for his decades of public service. Throughout his distinguished career, he represented Ghana in several diplomatic missions, including assignments in New York, and played a key role in shaping the country’s foreign policy.

He served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Member of Parliament for the Anlo Constituency, and later rose to become President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he championed regional integration and cooperation among West African nations.
Ambassador Gbeho was also widely recognized for his contributions to international diplomacy through his work with the United Nations and other global institutions.
President Mahama expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to Ambassador Gbeho’s remarkable legacy. He reflected on the late diplomat’s immense contributions to Ghana, West Africa, and the international community, describing him as a dedicated public servant whose impact would be remembered for generations.
The family indicated that funeral arrangements and further details regarding his final rites will be announced in due course.

The passing of Ambassador James Victor Gbeho marks the loss of a distinguished diplomat, respected statesman, and committed advocate for regional unity whose influence extended far beyond Ghana’s borders.
