Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League, raising the winners’ purse from GHS2 million to GHS3 million.
Speaking at the GFA’s 32nd Ordinary Congress in Prampram on Thursday, Okraku also revealed that each of the 18 participating clubs will receive GHS1 million before the start of the new season.
According to Okraku, the increased prize money and pre-season club funding form part of the association’s broader commitment to invest in domestic league football and reward excellence.
New Season Schedule and Promoted Clubs
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to kick off on the weekend of September 4–7, 2026, and run until May 28–31, 2027.
Three newly promoted clubs will feature in the top flight for the first time: Debibi United, FC AshantiGold 04, and Port City FC.
Significance of the Increased Investment
The move represents a notable step up from the previous season’s prize pool, which was set at GHS2 million for the champions, with Medeama SC claiming the title and the associated reward.
The decision follows a landmark 2025/26 season, which saw Ghana Premier League clubs benefit from a GHS1 million broadcasting injection and a 100% gate revenue retention policy. Medeama SC, who won the 2025/26 title, have already used their financial cushion to secure key players.
By increasing the winners’ prize to GHS3 million and guaranteeing GHS1 million to each club before the start of the season, the GFA is signaling a commitment to making the domestic league a more commercially viable competition for players, clubs, and investors.
