The Black Stars of Ghana have etched their name into African football history after becoming the African nation with the most FIFA World Cup victories following their dramatic 1-0 win over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana secured the historic milestone thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi, whose 94th-minute strike handed the Black Stars all three points in their Group L opener and elevated them to the summit of Africa’s World Cup winners’ chart.

With the victory, Ghana now boast six FIFA World Cup wins from just 16 matches, overtaking traditional African powerhouses and reinforcing their reputation as one of the continent’s most successful teams on football’s biggest stage.

Most FIFA World Cup Wins by African Nations

🥇 Ghana – 6 wins (16 matches)

🥈 Nigeria – 6 wins (21 matches)

🥉 Cameroon – 5 wins (26 matches)

4️⃣ Senegal – 5 wins (11 matches)

5️⃣ Morocco – 5 wins (23 matches)

Although Nigeria are level with Ghana on six victories, the Black Stars achieved the feat in five fewer matches, highlighting their impressive efficiency at World Cup tournaments.

Since making their FIFA World Cup debut in Germany in 2006, Ghana have consistently been among Africa’s strongest representatives. The Black Stars reached the Round of 16 in their maiden appearance before making history four years later in South Africa by becoming only the third African nation to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Ghana came agonisingly close to becoming the first African country to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2010, narrowly losing to Uruguay in a dramatic penalty shootout after one of the most memorable matches in World Cup history.

The Black Stars have since remained a regular presence on the global stage, qualifying for multiple World Cups and producing memorable performances against some of the world’s elite football nations.

Their latest achievement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup serves as another reminder of Ghana’s growing legacy in international football. With history now on their side and confidence soaring after their opening victory over Panama, Otto Addo’s men will be eager to build on their success as they continue their quest for a deep run in the tournament.

For Ghanaian football fans, the record is a source of immense pride, symbolising decades of progress, resilience, and excellence. The Black Stars are not only chasing success in the present—they are continuing to redefine African football history.
